METALWORK

eru and Bolivia are rich in metals and ores, and sophisticated metalwork technologies developed in the Andes two thousand years before the gold-seeking Spanish arrived. Gold and silver ornaments were reserved for the elite, who were often buried with elaborate treasures. The value of gold and other precious metals derived from the religious and symbolic forms into which they were fashioned. To think of precious metals as “money” was alien to Andean civilization.
